Caltagirone

The city of ceramics had its turning point with the arrival of Arabians and the Spanish changed the taste and demands of the people. The ease with which the clay deposits are extracted is the reason for the success of the terracotta potteries, in manufacturing tableware especially, for distribution throughout the region.

Villa Comunale – This beautiful garden is designed in 19th century. It is featured by shaded pathways that lead to ceramic sculptures, figures and fountains.

Museo della Ceramica – This was recreated in 1965. It contains 7 rooms with collection of ceramics from all over Sicily. Two rooms contain medieval ceramics of 18th and 19th century along with figurines representing scenes and customs of peasant life of the 19th century.

Carcere Borbonico – This is a square sandstone building built in 1700s and restored recently. This was used as a prison for more than a century. It now has a small city museum.

Castello Ursino – Building of Swabian period erected between 1239 and 1250 by Federick II. This contains Museo Civico – This has exhibits from all of Catania's history ranging from a Greek terracotta statue to mythical beasts to a 17C French engraved pistol depicting rabbits, fish and cherubs. This was once the proud fortress of Frederick II in the 13th century. Recreated in 1934 by combining the collection of the Benedectine monks with that of the Prince of Biscari.

Piazza del duomo – This was erected in the late 11th century at Roger I’s behest. The Cathedral façade, flanked by the Bishop’s Palace and the Porta Uzeda, dominates the square. Badia di S. Agata is located here and adds beauty to the site.
