The
city of ceramics had its turning point with the arrival of Arabians
and the Spanish changed the taste and demands of the people. The
ease with which the clay deposits are extracted is the reason for
the success of the terracotta potteries, in manufacturing tableware
especially, for distribution throughout the region.
Villa Comunale – This beautiful garden is
designed in 19th century. It is featured by shaded pathways that
lead to ceramic sculptures, figures and fountains.
Museo della Ceramica – This was recreated
in 1965. It contains 7 rooms with collection of ceramics from all
over Sicily. Two rooms contain medieval ceramics of 18th and 19th
century along with figurines representing scenes and customs of
peasant life of the 19th century.
Carcere Borbonico – This is a square sandstone
building built in 1700s and restored recently. This was used as
a prison for more than a century. It now has a small city museum.
Castello Ursino – Building of Swabian period
erected between 1239 and 1250 by Federick II. This contains Museo
Civico – This has exhibits from all of Catania's history ranging
from a Greek terracotta statue to mythical beasts to a 17C French
engraved pistol depicting rabbits, fish and cherubs. This was once
the proud fortress of Frederick II in the 13th century. Recreated
in 1934 by combining the collection of the Benedectine monks with
that of the Prince of Biscari.
Piazza del duomo – This was erected in the
late 11th century at Roger I’s behest. The Cathedral façade,
flanked by the Bishop’s Palace and the Porta Uzeda, dominates
the square. Badia di S. Agata is located here and adds beauty to
the site. |
