The
three Fortresses Along the cliff edge of Mount Titano stand the
three magnificient fortresses, still linked together by walls and
pathways to the town below:
» Guaita Fortress (First Tower) The First
Fortress was built in the XI century and restored in different time.
Some cells were used as a prison. To the left of the entrance stands
the Chapel, dedicated to St. Barbara
» Cesta Fortress (Second Tower) The Second
Fortress, dating back to the XIII century. The fortress stands on
the highest peak of Mount Titano and houses the Museum of Historical
Weapons from the XIII to the XIX century.
» Montale Fortress (Third Tower) Third Fortress,
used as a prison and sighting tower. It played an important role
during struggles with the Malatesta family. Access is restricted
to the outside of the fortress, which offers a spectacular view.
» Government Palace – Neo-gothic palace
restructured on the foundations of the original Romanesque “Parva
Domus Communis” by the Architect Francesco Azzurri (1894).
The building was re-opened recently following restoration work by
Gae Aulenti.
