Cinque Terre is a cultural landscape
of high scenic and cultural value. It was isolated for a long time.
The five villages were identified just a century ago. They seem
to cling to that very edge of the cliffs.
Corniglia has been known since 1200
but has very old Roman origins. It is known for its rich agriculture.
Riomaggiore lies to the east and is
named after the stream flowing across. The history of this town is
as old as seven centuries when the first settlement happened. Later,
after a century, settlement happened near the sea.
Manarola is situated along a stream.
The history of this village dates back to the early 13th century.
The church of San Lorenzo dates back to the 14th century built with
beautiful rose window.
Monterosso has the best beaches of
the Cinque Terre villages. The village is divided into two parts.
The new part represents the San Cristoforo hill and the old one still
stand a remembrance of the maritime village. It has its origin traced
in 643 BC.
The iron and cement sculpture by Gigante,
originally 14 meters high and built in the early 20th century in
the place of a villa on a rock of the Fegina beach, withstood the
bombardments of World War II and stormy seas. The church of Capuchin
Father has a painting of the Cambiaso and a crucifixion
attributed to Van Dyck.
Vernazza is of amphitheatre shaped
port and is the picturesque village in Cinque Terre. It had a great
importance during the age of the Maritime Republics in Genoa. It enjoys
political and economic importance over centuries represented by rich
houses with porticoes. It is famous for its carpenters.
