Castles

Many castles dot Bozen’s topography. The most important one of them is Castel Mareccio situated on the banks of the River Talvera. It has five magnificent towers that overlook the neighbouring homes. The castle is now used as a convention center. Set amidst lush greenery, vineyards and forested hills, this 13th century fortress offers you come breathtaking panoramic views of the surroundings. The inside of the castle is stonewalled and is reminiscence of the medieval age. There is also a bar inside the castle. It remains open from Wednesday to Monday from 9 am to 6 pm. The timing might change during conventions.

Castel Roncolo is another interesting castle situated in the northern part of Bozen. It is built on a cliff face and overlooks the town below. Built in the 13th century beautiful frescoes from the story of Tristan and Isolde were added in the 14th and 15th centuries. Although these have faded a great deal now it is still very moving. The artist’s craftsmanship is remarkable and although the techniques used by him are now developed greatly the frescoes are still important. An admission of 8€ for adults, 5.50€ for students and seniors over 60, 13€ for a family card for four is charged. You can also take an hour-long guided tour in English for an extra 2.70€ per person (minimum six people). The castle is open from Tuesday through Sunday; from October to June it is opened from 10am to 6pm, and from July to September between 10am to 8pm.

Cable Cars

You can take a cable car from the center of Bozen to the mountains that surround it. Several cars make the trip each day. The most sought after rude is from the terminal to the pasture-covered plateau of Altopiano del Renon. It is a fabulous viewing point of the town of Bozen below and the Dolomites above. This ride takes you to Sopra Bozen, otherwise known as Oberbozen. You can either sit back and enjoy the view with a drink in hand or walk or take an electric tram to the nearby beautiful rock formations. The cable car ride takes 15 minutes one-way and runs between 7 am and 8 pm. A round trip costs 5€ including the electric tram fare or 4€ without it.

You could also take the Funivia di San Genesio to the forested hillside village of San Genesio Atesino. Cable cars make the journey from the terminus on Via Sarentino every hour between 7 am and 7 pm from Monday to Saturday and from 8 am to 7 pm on Sundays. This trip also takes 15 minutes and a two-way ticket costs 3.50€. At San Genesio you can take a two-hour horse ride to the Alpine meadows for 16€. Nightlife

You have many bars and pubs to choose from, especially around Piazza delle Erbe. You will also find a few places where live music is played here.

Your best bets for local wines cost 1€ a glass upwards are Etti's Thekki at Piazza Erbe 11 and Hopfen & Co., Piazza Erbe 17. The latter is a tiny Tirolean pub with wooden tables inside and a few tables outside on the sidewalk. They brew their own beer and also serve some deletable local cuisine like Würstel, bier goulasch, and speck canerdeli. A hearty meal can cost you anywhere between 5€ and 11€.

Youngsters prefer to hang out at Exil on Piazza del Grano/Kornplatz 2. It is a coffee house as well as a bar. They also serve sandwiches and pastries. The Laurin Bar at the Park Hotel Laurin doubles as a jazz club on weekend. It attracts a number of people and is definitely the most happening place over the weekend.

For the typical ancient Bozen experience, head to Fishbanke om Via d. Streiter 26A. They serve wine, beer, and food on the old stone slabs formerly belonging to Bozen's ancient former fish market. It is a popular hangout for locals and tourists alike.
