Mud Baths
Laghetti di Fanghi is where the famous mud baths of the island
is located. Situated close to the port on Via Provinciale, the waters
are a great cure for rheumatism and skin diseases. These baths are
radioactive and you are advised to spend 10-15 minutes in them.
It also discolours everything. After getting out of the mud bath
you can head to sea nearby. The water is piping hot and it is a
good way to wash off all mud off you. The air smells strongly of
sulphur and this might cause you some discomfort. The bath is open
everyday between April and October between 6:30 am and 8 pm. An
admission of 1€ is charged. |
| The Beaches |
| Spiaggia Sabbie Nere (Black Sands Beach) is considered the best
beach on the Aeolian Islands. It extends from Porto di Levante to
Porto di Ponente. Walk down Via Ponente to get here. This beach experience
will be different from any other beach experience as it is a black
sand beach. The sand gets really hot around midday and make sure you
carry suitable beach footwear. Its not your run of the mill surf and
sand beach experience. But, keep in mind that its black volcanic sand
gets so hot by midday that flip-flops or wading shoes are a virtual
necessity if you plan to while away your day here. |
| Vulcanello |
Locally dubbed the volcanic pimple, Vulcanello is located on
the northern tip of Vulcano. An underwater eruption in 183 BC formed
it. The last time it was active was in 1888 and formed strange lava
fountains that the locals at that time called Valle die Mostri or
Valley of Monsters. These figurines look like sculptures and now
natural formations. |
| Gelso
& Piano |
The southern villages of Gelso and Piano are not as developed
as northern Vulcano but a visit will be well worth the effort as
you will get some spectacular ocean views and also get away from
the throngs of tourists. You can take the local bus to get here.
Piano, an inland village, is situated between two peaks –
Mount Saraceno and La Sommata. You will see a number of summer villas
here. Gelso has some nice places to eat and you will also find some
comfortable sunbathing spots. Gelso in Italian means mulberry and
as they are cultivated here, it lent its name to the village. The
most popular beach here is Spiaggia dell'Asino. You can rent hydrocycles,
deck chairs and umbrellas can be rented during the summer months.
Head to Capo Grillo for the best views from the island.
Alternately you can take a boat ride to Gelso. You can rent boats
from Centro Nautico Baia Levante at Porto di Levante or Blob Center
Oasy at Porto di Ponente. You could also explore caves and bays
around the island on you boat. The rent for each boat ranges anywhere
between 50€ and 500€ for the day. |
| The
Gran Cratere |
An excursion to the top of Gran Cratere and back will take roughly
three hours. Follow Via Piano towards the volcano. There are signs
to lead you to the trail that will take you to the top. You should
not leave the island without having done this once in a lifetime
experience. Not only will you get to see the solidified lava from
previous eruptions, you will also get to peek into the peak. You
also get the best views of the Aeolian Islans from here. However,
you must not spend too much time here as the air is full of toxins.
