Nicola Trussardi

Leather could be used in no better way than Trussardi did!

Nicola Trussardi was born in Bergamo in 1942. He studied in Milan at the Catholic University. He graduated in Economics and Business Science. He got married to Maria Luisa Gavazzeni. They are blessed with two sons and two daughters - Beatrice, Francesco, Gaia and Tommaso.

Their grand father, Dante Trussardi founded a glove-making business in 1910. He was a specialist glove-maker, with the company set up in Bergamo, Italy. The product was finely made gloves which quickly became world famous.

Nicola took over his family's glove-making business in 1970. With much experience in leather work, Nicola wanted to produce variety of products. He made a thorough study of leather, its refining and treatment processes just to be able to manufacture other stylish and classy products. The business turned into a major company and contributed to the recognition of the made-in-Italy label all round the world. The business was expanded into a variety of other products beyond gloves like luxury items and accessories etc.

The brand Trussardi

Trussardi was the first company in Italy dedicated to fashion to make use of the concept of a brand in 1973. The same year, the famous spiky greyhound logo was created by Trussardi. He used the brand on his small leather goods, bags and suitcases. The instant success powered him to add more goods to the line like shoes, belts, umbrellas, ties etc.

It was in sync with dynamism and elegance, a distinct sign of continuous revolution and evolution of fashion throughout the world. Experimenting on the traditional craftsmanship on tanned leathers, the specialization was mainly in the creation of handbags, luggage accessories, other leather goods etc according to the growing needs of the Italians and others across the world. Trussardi was able to open a showroom in Milan in 1976 that would sell leather jackets and some other goods in leather.

He then launched a line of leather jackets, which was the first step towards a ready-to-wear line. During the 80s the collection contained menswear, women’s wear, children's wear and sportswear. The Trussardi's Fashion House contained a wide range of design activities. It had already designed the interiors for the airline company Alitalia, cars for Alfa Romeo, telephones and even helicopters. Trussardi also designed outfits for athletes competing in the 1988 Olympics in Korea.

Since then, Trussardi has taken many initiatives that include the creation of the Palatrussardi that has hosted a number of pop and rock concerts in Milan, including Liza Minnelli, Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis, Jr. Other projects include a specially fitted-out Mini that was produced by Innocenti.

Nicola’s first ready-to-wear collection made a debut in the year 1983 with a show organized at the Teatro alla Scala, Milan. Trussardi could apply his aesthetic sense and practicality in the field of design to create style objects for personal use. The designing also extended to the elegant designing of bicycles, motorcycles, aircraft interiors and car interiors.

The focus on every field around made their trademark a symbol to reckon with for every fashion lover. The activities included everything from marketing to design, culture and even finance. The Palatrussardi was born as a result of this. It was a point that became a reference to a wide range of cultural events during the 80s and production of a wide range of products ranging from Trussardi Sport, Trussardi Jeans, neckties, children’s wear, foulards, eyewear and fragrances.

Trussardi won the Iminagena Italia award in 985 and 1986.

The company acquired the status of a corporate during the 90s. It developed a network of boutiques that carried their unique brand. It was also a period when the Trussardi style was being accomplished globally. They were actually possible only by the re-establishment of Palazzo Marino alla Scala, and the establishment of Fondazione Nicola Trussardi. The mission of the foundation was to spread contemporary art and culture in all aspects and languages.

In 1999, Nicola Trussardi was killed in a car crash. He was 56 years old. He went into a coma but never recovered. His son Francesco and daughter Beatrice carried on the responsibilities further after their father’s death.

The Trussardi Today

Francesco Trussardi and Beatrice decided to move on with their father’s entrepreneurial program incorporating their own personal and innovative touch to it. The Trussardi group today aims at more concentration on their products and thereby their business in apparel and a variety of leather goods.

The Nicola Trussardi Foundation is a non profit institution. It promotes culture and contemporary art under the President, Beatrice Trussardi. The foundation is dedicated to uphold and concentrate resources for the development of contemporary art and related events in the city of Milan.

The Trussardi Group over the years has developed a flexible and highly dynamic structure with greatly specialized circles of production based on research and innovative creations for every single product line. The group relies only on authoritative and qualified associations for numerous businesses in future as well.
