Moto
Guzzi was born when three men sharing the same passion for motorcycles
met at the Italian Air Force, during World War I. The passionate
men behind this were
| Carlo Guzzi - Designer and Technician |
| Giorgio Parodi - Finance |
| Giovanni Ravelli - Pre War Racing Driver |
Giovanni
Ravelli though was with them in the intial stages, perished in an
aircrash and in fond memory of him all the Moto Guzzi productions
were marked with the Soaring Eagle. The first motor cycle was desined
by Carlo Guzzi with the help of Giorgio Ripamonti and it was presented
to the Geonese Ship Owner Emanuele Vittorio Parodi, father of Giorgio
Parodi. Vittorio Parodi agreed to finance a motor cycle production
company and everything started in 1921 at Mandello del Lario on
the eastern shore of Lake Como in Italy.
Carlo Guzzi & Giorgio Ravelli took their respective places
as discussed earlier and founded the "Società Anonima
Moto Guzzi". Carlo Guzzi passion did not allow him to introduce
another traditional motor cycle, he envisioned every component and
designed it to the perfect. His idealogy to strike a difference
with the other manufacturers in engine configuration and low-slung
frame is still the production basics of the company even today.
The
first motorcycle to be introduced into the market was G.P. (Initial
of Guzzi-Parodi), but to subsequently avoid confusion over the trademark
it was renamed as Moto Guzzi and the Soaring Eagle Logo was marked
in all the productions of Moto Guzzi. In order to promote the companies
products Carlo Guzzi participated Milan - Naples race, though he
did not win the race, he comfortably completed the race.
In not less than 4 months the sensational Moto Guzzi won the first
place at the Targa Florio, ably won by Gino Finzi. This sensational
win marked all the difference in the models emerged in subsequent
series produced at Motto Guzzi. In 1933 Moto Guzzi's first produced
Twin 500 raced in the International Racing Consecration in Isle
of Man and created history by winning the competion. This was the
first Non British manufactured bike to sweeps its glory in Isle
of Man. The result, media applauds the performance of Motto Guzzi
and the Icon Moto Guzzi firmly rooted its foot in racing arena.
Motto
Guzzi sensational successes contined and won them 3,329 race wins,
11 Tourist Trophies and 14 World Championship Titles between 1921
and 1957. Motto Guzzi officially retired from the racing arena in
1957 and focused in the development for Light Motor Cycle. It was
the post war era of World War II and Italy's tornished economy and
war torn roads led this legendary company to focus its resources
in the production of light motor cycles to make transportation much
more easier to the people of Italy.
Motto Guzzi withdrawal for the racing arena and the death of The
Founders Giorgio Parodi (1955) & Carlo Guzzi (1964) and the
unpredictable Motorcycle market disturbed the companies economy
and it was acquired by SEIMM.
Though the company Moto Guzzi was taken up by SEIMM, they manufactured
light weight motor cycles and introduced them in their original
names. Many revolutionary models were introduced during this era
and there are thoushands of passionate Motor Sport lovers who still
remember Moto Guzzi golden moments during the period of 1921 - 1957
that created history in Motor Cycling. |
